Siddhas fundamental perspective

If the purpose of meditation is to unravel ones shrouded divinity, one need not go very far. According to the Siddhas, the human body is a portal through which larger domains of our own being and of Being-ness itself are accessible. The human body is the only gateway to feeling, touching, surrendering and ultimately identifying with the totality of Being. Meditations belonging to the Siddha lineage are primarily body-based because the inner dimensions of the body are in direct experience of the Primal organising force that incarnated it. This is how any form of meditation centred in the felt-sense of the body can bring radical change in our state of being.

Human beings are a part of Nature, and SHE (Nature) organises each moment of livingness in every one of us. This way, say the Siddhas, man is part of the macrocosm and he himself its microcosm. If what is out there is equally in here, then how is it that we get sick and die but the macrocosm doesn’t? This question nagged Palpandian for several years, the answer to which he found hidden in his journey as a healer, and personal sadhana. As per the Siddha tradition since man is no different from the grand cosmos, the rules that apply out there, apply within too and both levels of existence are always taken into consideration. The individual-level is always in connect with the transcendental one. This is the fundamental perspective of the Siddhas.

Vasi – the way of the Siddhas

The human being is a multi-sheathed interwoven organism with its origin in the sky (Ether element) and its roots within the Earth (Earth element). The remaining three primary elements (air, fire and water) are what compose the intermediate form – the human body. We are more than just the frame of our physical body. The origin, the Siddhas name in their manuscripts as, Thiru Vasi. (Each ancient tradition has its own name for the origin). Thiru Vasi remains as our source of livingness throughout our lifespan. Once it withdraws we die. The Siddhas revere Thiru Vasi as the, flawless cosmic blueprint of creation, sustenance and dissolution. As the rhythmically breathing Thiru Vasi enfolds space, it gives birth to form. This process of enfoldment is easily identifiable in the formative stages of the human embryo. To put it very simply, it is the breath (inhalation and exhalation) of the Primary source that gives forth all forms, cradles it and dissolves it as well. No form exists independent of Thiruvasi. In Palpandian’s book, Siddhas masters of the basics , he writes, …. “as the macro so the micro…..” implying that Thiru Vasi exists even on an individual level. The Siddhas name it Vasi. Vasi is the guarding intelligence / energy fuelling core livingness by its inherent rhythmic breath, and connectivity with its grander counterpart, Thiru Vasi. In the Siddha tradition, Vasi is of core spiritual importance. Vasi, from its pulsating core spurts a fountain of fuel, bringing us to life and provides for involuntary functions such as breathing, digestion, blood circulation, assimilation, even blinking and a host of other survival gestures. These are existential essentials. But to walk, run, see, feel, think, have urges and desires etc., demands a lot more energy, which we contribute to this primal fuel through our breath, food and water. The combined fuel supply allows for an organised and meaningful life.

The Siddhas describe 5 sheaths of the human form as:

  • Food Sheath or Gross body
  • Pranic body or Vital-air Sheath
  • Mental Sheath (Manomaya Kosam)
  • Intellectual Sheath (Vigyanmaya Kosam)
  • Bliss Sheath (Anandamaya Kosa)
A vital energy flows through all five sheaths, keeping them interrelated by way of a network of Nadis or channels that carry this rippling energy to its destined locations for internal bodily processes to take place. This is a simplistic description of how we are brought to life, formed, sustained and eventually dissolve.
